Reblog Wednesday: In Defense of Stay-At-Home Moms — Autism in Our Nest

As a stay at home mom whom didn’t stay home from the beginning, I must say the transition was rather smooth. I loved my position in the corporate world, but once I had my oldest, my heart yearned to be with her and raise her myself.

I came across this post from Autism Family Power where she mentions coming across an article where a working woman asks, “what do stay at home moms do all day?” The question wasn’t ill intended, but rather out of curiosity.

I chuckled a bit and then had the sudden urge to detail and justify my role at home. However, each of us has different reasons for our decision to stay at home, and the role of a parent that stays in the home is like no other. His/her role comes without a financial earning, without breaks, days off and too often are running on fumes.

However, the internal satisfaction of making sure my kids are taken care of, taking care of my families daily needs and each of my children’s individual needs be it school or otherwise, is beyond any pay check I could ever receive. The ‘tasks/jobs’ are endless, from scheduling doctors appointments, to making sure my son is thriving in school since his autism diagnosis, to potty training – still doing it. The list goes on and on. All the while praying I am doing a good enough job at raising good, compassionate citizens. Also, caring for myself as I have Chiari 1 Malformation – a congenital disorder.

So, if you’re a stay at home parent or not, our goals are all the same. We’re all caring for our homes and our families needs to the best of our abilities, being in the corporate world or not.

Recently I read an article where a woman asked Stay-At-Home Moms what they did all day. At first I got defensive, but changed my mood. Read more about this, here!

  1. Stay at home moms are becoming extinct…and it’s easy to see why…with all the financial burden we have to carry. As a stay at home mom, I have to say that I love it. It’s fulfilling in ways that corporate world isn’t. There are pros and cons to everything, of course but being home and being there for kids is a dream come true for me. Yes, I have to forgo many pretty things that my eyes obsess over but it’s all so worthwhile, in my view. Amazing post, Ana. Thanks for sharing!

  2. There’s nothing wrong with a woman who wants to be a homemaker. Modernity has downplayed the homemaker and what do we have to show for it? Busy parents who don’t have time for their children so they pawn responsibility off on others/society to teach and raise. And we wonder how things have gotten so bad..

    1. He preaches the truth! Our teachers already don’t get paid enough, and their requirements doesn’t entail in raising my child, but rather teach them. I’m no one to judge. But yes, modern society frowns upon a parent staying home, and they wonder ‘how you do it – financially.’ I get it. However I also believe in the Lord providing and living within our means.

I’ll quickly tell you something that recently happened, my husband was walking with our kids in our new neighborhood. A man pulls in to his drive way, gets out his car and yells out, ‘must be nice to live off the government.’ My husband turned around and yelled back, ‘I wouldn’t know.’ The man turned around and walked inside his house. 🤨 Again, I get it. But contrary to what people may believe when they see our tiny army, we don’t have government help in anything, nothing. We pay food, health insurance, etc ourselves.

It can be done! I can stay home and raise our kids, with Lords help, we’ve made it happen. 😊🙏🏽

      1. I completely get it…….. 6 kids and stay at home mom. (Race thing also) Judgmental people automatically assume government living… people don’t know you. The same guy who yelled is the same guy who has never talked to either you or your husband. He had no clue he’s a marine veteran! He’s so smart he “automatically knows”…

I hate that Ana! But you’re right!

      2. That’s it, doesn’t know you or your family, where you’ve been nor where you’re going.
Haha, you’re absolutely right. I think I would have had to think about that one for a minute. I’m a little slower these days. My husband is quick – as you are, thank God for that.
Bless that mans heart. That’s all I can say. 😏 You understand, and I’m so glad you do, I honestly do. Thank you.
