Nail File Friday’s: Negative Space Black French Manicure

I don’ know if I’m late to the party but either way, I’m officially hooked on the ease of this nail art and the many different ways you can take this. Because as they say, the possibilities are endless. I just recently found out about the ‘negative space’ nail art craze. I have to say, I’m on board, completely! With all my little ones, the still on going back to school preparations and home life, this ‘negative space’ nail art is just what a busy mom needs in her life!

Essie Nail Polish Used: Essie Under The Twilight (dark purple) I had originally wanted to also use Anchor Down (gray-blue tone) but then opted not to, hence the pictures.

Nail Tools Used: Nail Brush and Avery Reinforcement Labels or you can also try these French Manicure Stickers – Mix Styles such beautiful styles for a ‘French’ style manicure, works as an easy guide for a non-professional nail gal like myself.

What is this ‘negative space’ nail trend you ask? The idea is basically to have your natural nail incorporated in your nail art, to have your uncolored nail showing through – amazing right?! I mean unpainted nails, on trend?! Yes, finally, hassle free nail art! As you can see here, I did it by doing a basic french manicure and having it look not so basic.

Steps for general nail polish with nail art:

Step One: 1 Coat of ‘Seche’ Base Coat

Step Two: This is really self explanatory but one thing that really helps me when doing a french manicure is using the reinforcement labels, simply cut them in half and place them on top of the nail, making sure you are gently pressing on the corners so they are well placed on the nail, apply the nail polish and remove the labels while the polish is still wet, clean up the sides of the nail by simply dipping the nail brush in acetone. I applied a full coat of nail polish on the thumbs. Tip: While you have the label on your nail, apply one coat of the nail polish, remove the sticker and carefully go back and apply a second coat of the nail polish.

Step Three: Allow nail art to completely dry before applying top coat to avoid smudging

Step Four: 1 Coat of ‘Out The Door’ Top Coat

Nail File Friday’s: Simple Nail Art for Girls + Rainbow of Grays

This week I’m going to also share with you what my oldest daughter is wearing, because you know, she loves nail art too! It’s easier than it looks and your girl will love it – try it on yourself too, it’s so easy! Also, prep your nails properly to ensure they don’t get yellow from polishing them, you can see which base coat and top coat polishes I use here and here for the tools I own for at home manicures. Let’s begin …

My daughter wanted pink polka dots, so in order to make the dots stand out, I placed a white nail polish underneath.

Essie: Blanc (white) and Mod Square (pink)

Essie Nail Polish Used: Blanc (white) and Mod Square (pink)

Nail Tools Used: Nail Brush + Dotting Tool, piece of aluminum foul to pour a small amount of the polish you will be using for the ‘dots’

It’s really so simple, first use your base coat to protect your nail, let it dry and here I applied Blanc, I allowed it to dry completely, then I got a small piece of aluminum foil and poured a small amount of Mod Square – if it becomes sticky, pour some more next to it, and with my dotting tool, I dipped it, first started in the center of the nail, creating three dots, and then on the sides creating a ‘zig zag’ with the pink polish, this made it easier to keep all the nails cohesive. Tip: You can clean your dotting tool in between polishes with acetone and wiping it with a napkin. Allow the dots to dry completely before applying your top coat – otherwise your pink dots will smear. And you’re done!

So, I wanted to try the reinforcement labels again and here are the colors that I did this week.

Essie: Good As Gold (gold) and Licorice (black)

Nail Tools Used: Avery Reinforcement Labels

After prepping your nail with the base coat and allowing it to dry, I put Good As Gold polish on all my nails, allowing this to dry I then placed a reinforcement label on each nail. You can see this post on how to properly place labels on your nail, once you have the labels nicely secured – don’t forget the sides, paint the top part of the nail with the Licorice nail polish, while still wet, remove the label and allow the nails to dry completely before applying your top coat.

Lastly, I wanted a ‘rainbow’ of gray nail shades for this look.

Essie: Glitter Polish (not Essie), Blanc (white), Petal Pushers (gray) and Anchor Down (blueish-gray)

Essie Nail Polish Used: Any glitter shade, Blanc (white), Petal Pushers (gray tone) and Anchor Down (darker bluish-grayish tone)

Nail Tools Used: Cosmetic Foam Wedge – if you find yourself having more clear polish than glitter on your nails, take a look at this

As always apply your base coat, here I used the glitter polish for on the pinky – don’t judge the current state of this foam wedge! Eek … OK, let’s move on. If you see yourself having to apply your glitter polish too many times to count and still don’t have enough glitter – do this, apply one edge of the foam wedge, this will ‘soak’ up the clear polish and leave you with just the glitter, dab the foam on your nail, reapply and repeat the steps until your entire nail is covered with glitter – shouldn’t take too many applications. You’ll have on your nail exactly what you see in the bottle! That’s it, it’s that easy to apply glitter, who knew?! Moving on, on the ring finger I applied Blanc, on the middle finger Petal Pusher and on the pointer and thumb the Anchor Down shade. After the nails have dried, apply a top coat to give your polish a great shine!

Nail File Friday’s: Reinforcement Labels For Nail Art + Gold Tape

It’s that time of the week, where I show you what I’ve been up to – or rather my nails! I love trying new things and this week, I picked up some reinforcement stickers to make some nail art. The sky’s the limit, so take risks, be bold and try new things! Now, if you try the labels and you don’t like it, a quick swipe with acetone is all it takes to do something else. If there’s one thing that makes my heart happy is pretty polished nails! So let’s do this….

Nail Polish Buying Tip: Try going to a ‘mom and pop’ beauty supply store. I’ve noticed their prices on all things beauty or in this case nail shades – including Essie, are better priced than the other ‘well-known’ beauty supply stores like, Sally’s. I found one in my area that sells Essie shades at half the price! :: insert heart eyes here :: Google it, search for it sister, you won’t be disappointed!

I used the Find Me An Oasis for all fingers, excluding the ring finger and thumb which I used the Good As Gold – have I told you how dreamy this color is, it’s the perfect gold! Now allow the nails to dry completely and apply one of the Avery reinforcement labels on each nail, let the inner circle of the label sit right above your cuticle – the bottom portion of your nail will be covered with the sticker, press down on the label and paint the top part of the nail in a different color, here I colored them all on top with Marshmallow – put as many coats to achieve the color you want, here I applied about 3 to get it to a very white look, and peel off the sticker while the polish is still wet.

Nail Tools Used: Cuticle Nipper and Nail Striping Tape in Gold or you can try this Multi Colored Striping Tape – both great options!

Here the pinky is in the Good As Gold, the ring finger, pointer finger and the thumb in Figi and the middle finger in Marshmallow . Using the Gold Nail Striping Tape I placed it on the pointer finger slightly to the right in a vertical position, get as close to the cuticle as possible and pull the tape to the front of the nail, then cut with the Cuticle Nipper and on the ring finger I placed the tape horizontally – remember, you can recreate this look or try something new, there have been plenty of times when I start with something in mind and end up with something different. On the ring finger once the polish has dried completely, place the gold tape and press softly, apply the Marshmallow shade – apply as many coats to achieve the desired darkness in color, this shade is a little light but with about 3 coats I got it to where I liked it, while still wet you can remove the tape and once dried you can re-apply the tape on the meeting line OR you can leave the tape IF there isn’t polish over it – I like placing the tape and then removing it, now once done cut the excess tape with the Cuticle Nipper and you’re all set!
